Issue/Introduction

  • When reviewing network configuration in the vSphere Client, multiple port groups with identical names appear on a single VMware ESXi host.

  • This configuration drift can lead to network connectivity issues or incorrect virtual machine (VM) network assignments.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

An external automation workflow incorrectly provisioned duplicate port groups on the ESXi host's standard switch.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, manually remove the redundant port groups to restore the standard switch topology to a compliant state.

Prerequisites

This command will make changes to your system. Review it carefully before running.

Verify that no powered-on virtual machines are currently connected to the redundant port group(s) targeted for removal.

Procedure

1. In the vSphere Client, navigate to the host.
2. On the Configure tab, expand Networking and select Virtual Switches.
3. Select the standard switch.
4. From the topology diagram of the switch, select the port group that you want to remove by clicking its label.
5. From the toolbar in the switch topology, click the Remove action icon.
