Issue/Introduction

When restructuring infrastructure—such as during a corporate divestiture or data center migration—virtual machines (VMs) may need to migrate from one vSAN Data-At-Rest (DAR) Encrypted cluster to another DAR cluster.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi (All Versions)
VMware vCenter (All Versions)
VMware vSAN OSA and ESA (All Versions)

Resolution

With Data-At-Rest encryption it's the disks themselves that make up the datastore that are encrypted and not the actual data. So a normal svMotion from one cluster to the other will suffice.

  1. Ensure both clusters are healthy and all disks mounted
  2. Storage vMotion the VMs.
  3. Ensure to select a compatible storage policy when migrating to the new cluster.
