Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to create a vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) image using ESXi 9.0.1.0 (Build 24957456), combined with Dell Firmware and the vSAN QTS 3.0.0-0 hardware add-on, the validation process fails.

  • Clicking the "Validate" button yields the following error in the vSphere Client UI:

"Specified hsp vSAN QTS, hsp version 3.0.0-0 for hsm com.dell.plugin.OpenManager_HWSupportManager is not compatible with Base Image Version 9.0.1.0.24957456. Invalid hardware support spec specified in the draft."

  • Validation succeeds when creating an image with the exact same Dell Firmware and vSAN QTS 3.0.0-0 add-on, provided the base image is ESXi 9.0.0.0.
  • Under vCenter server /var/log/vmware/vmware-updatemgr/vum-server/vmware-vum-server.log  file reveals the following error message

Environment

ESXi 9.0.1.0 (Build 24957456)

Dell OpenManage Enterprise Integration for VMware vCenter (OMEVV) 1.9.0

Cause

  • This issue occurs due to a compatibility limitation within the current release of the Dell OMEVV plugin.

  • Dell OMEVV version 1.9.0 does not currently support ESXi 9.0.1.0 for combined software and firmware upgrades via the global vSphere Lifecycle Manager image creation workflow. Consequently, the Hardware Support Manager (HSM) flags the 9.0.1.0 base image as incompatible during the validation check.

Resolution

A future update to the Dell OMEVV plugin is required to provide full support for ESXi 9.0.1 upgrade workflows within vLCM.

Workaround

To manage the environment until the updated OMEVV plugin is released, update the components separately:

  1. Update Firmware: Use the Dell OMEVV console to update hardware firmware independently of the vSphere Lifecycle Manager image.
  2. Update ESXi + Addons: In vSphere Lifecycle Manager, modify the cluster image to remove the Hardware Support Manager (set the Firmware and Drivers Addon to None). This will allow the ESXi base image and other software addons to be validated and applied via vLCM.
  3. Manual Image Creation: Navigate to the specific Cluster > Updates > Image tab to define and save the image configuration without the HSM component.
