Issue/Introduction

Users may notice that the sender information displayed in the "Envelope Sender" column of the Symantec Email Security.cloud interface does not match the actual sender shown when an email is opened.

In some cases, the Envelope Sender may display as "Bounce" or show a long, unique address that is not the intended sender's email.

Environment

Email Security.cloud

Cause

This behavior is due to the fundamental technical difference between how emails are routed and how they are displayed to the end user.

  • Envelope Sender (RFC 5321): Also known as the "Mail From" address, this is used for SMTP routing and bounce management. It identifies the return path for the message if it cannot be delivered. Distribution lists and automated systems often use specific or unique envelope addresses to track bounces.
  • Body Sender (RFC 5322): This is the "From" address that appears in the body of the email and is visible to the user within their mail client. This address is used for display purposes and is what most users recognize as the sender.

Resolution

The interface columns are labeled to reflect which sender type is being displayed.

  1. Verify Sender Information: If the Envelope Sender shows "Bounce" or a different address, it is functioning as intended for SMTP routing. This is common with bulk email services or distribution lists.
  2. Identify the True Sender: To view the "Body Sender" or display address, you must click into the email record to see the message headers and full body details.
  3. Track and Trace: When performing searches in Track and Trace, you can search using the Envelope Sender if the specific routing path is known, or filter by recipient and subject to find the corresponding record for a specific Body Sender.
