Users upgrading to or deploying vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) 8.0 may observe that hardware memory requirements have increased compared to version 7.0. For example, a "Tiny" deployment configuration requires 14 GB of RAM in version 8.0, whereas it required 12 GB in version 7.0. Attempts to manually reduce the memory allocation to 7.0 levels via VM settings can lead to service instability and performance degradation.

vCenter Server 8.0 requires a higher memory baseline to support feature enhancements and expanded service architectures.

Resolution

•  Verify Minimum Requirements: Consult the vCenter Server Appliance Hardware Requirements to confirm the minimum RAM required for the specific deployment size.
  
  
• Adhere to Minimum Resource Specifications: Ensure the memory allocation of the VCSA virtual machine is at or above the documented threshold (e.g., 14 GB for Tiny). While increasing memory beyond the default is supported and may be recommended for scaling or performance tuning, it must never be reduced below the baseline for the selected deployment size.
  
  
• Address Resource Constraints: If the ESXi host lacks sufficient physical RAM, consider offloading workloads or adding physical memory rather than down-sizing the vCenter Server resource allocation.
  
  
• Operational Risks of Sub-standard Allocation: Reducing memory below the 8.0 baseline increases the probability of:
  • Java heap memory exhaustion in core services.
  • vCenter appliance operating system swap usage.
  • Significant latency in the vSphere Client and API responses.
