Issue/Introduction

 

  • Post deploying Ubuntu based Guest OS using template, halfway through boot process we will see the blank / black screen in the Guest OS as -



  • While the networking and storage configuration is intact, the Guest OS is just stuck at blank / black screen after VM powering on 

Environment

VMware vCenter Server 7.x 
VMware vCenter Server 8.x 

Cause

This issue is primarily impacting following Linux based Guest OS only-
CentOS, Ubuntu 24.04, RHEL 10

Resolution

Any of the following workarounds can be used to fix this issue -

  • Change the settings in /etc/gdm3/custom.conf to WaylandEnable=false on the Ubuntu 24.04
  • or Upgrade the Guest to Ubuntu 25.04 where this issue is fixed
