Virtual Machines Missing from HCX "Create Mobility Group" UI

Issue/Introduction

During a HCX migration, specific Virtual Machines do not populate in the HCX user interface. The affected VM-IDs are unavailable for selection within the "create mobility-group" UI workflow.

Environment

VMware HCX 4.11.#

Cause

The HCX Virtual_Machine database table lacks some necessary fields such as "NAME" field for the affected VMs,  even though the vCenter VPX_Entity table displays the correct mapping to the MOREF ID. 

Exact cause is still being investigated and this KB will be updated when/if this is discovered.

Resolution

Below workarounds can be utilized:

 

  1. Unregister and re-register the affected Virtual Machine(s) in the vCenter Server inventory. This action generates a new Managed Object Reference (MOREF) ID, which can force HCX to discover the object correctly.

  2. If HCX migration remains unviable, utilize native Advanced Cross vCenter vMotion to migrate the Virtual Machine directly across the source and destination vCenter Server instances, bypassing the HCX appliance.
