Issue/Introduction

After enabling "Memory Tiering over NVMe" on a VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) 9.0.2 workload domain, the following metrics are not collected or visible within the VCF Operations interface:

  • NVMe Tier device latencies at the storage adapter level.
  • NVMe Tier bandwidth/throughput.

These metrics appear to be missing from the available metric collection list for ESXi hosts and clusters, even when memory tiering is active and functioning at the vSphere layer.

Environment

VMware Cloud Foundation Operations (formerly VMware Aria Operations) 9.0.x

Cause

While "Memory Tiering over NVMe" is a feature in vSphere 9.0, there is currently a monitoring gap in the VCF Operations 9.0.x release.

Resolution

This is a known feature gap in VMware Cloud Foundation Operations 9.0.x. Full integration and collection of these memory tiering metrics are planned for a future release.

Please subscribe to this article for notifications on updates and availability of this feature in upcoming versions of VCF Operations.

Additional Information

vCenter may show some helpful metrics:

  • Memory type read bandwidth
  • Memory type read latency
  • Memory type write bandwidth
  • Memory type write latency
  • Memory type total bandwidth

The following ESX command may also show helpful information:

memstats -r vmtier-stats
