Cloud Secure Web Gateway - Cloud SWG

Issue/Introduction

This document provides Symantec processes and customer best practices and procedures for testing Enterprise Security Agent Cloud SWG (ESA Cloud SWG) against pre-release versions of Microsoft Windows and Apple macOS operating systems. Testing against these early versions is highly encouraged to ensure a seamless transition and continuous protection when the operating systems are generally available (GA).

1. ESA Cloud SWG Support Policy

Symantec aims to ensure that ESA Cloud SWG is fully functional and supported on new OS versions as quickly as possible following their GA. Although some OS versions require an updated agent for full compatibility, certification can be typically achieved using the current publicly released agent.

Notes

Major Version Upgrade (e.g., Windows 10 -> 11, macOS 15 -> 16)

Within 30 days of OS GA

We will document known issues if full support cannot be certified within this timeframe.

Minor Update (Service Packs, Patches, Minor Releases)

Upon OS GA

Support is typically certified immediately upon the OS release.

Note: While official support is not extended to production deployments on pre-release OS versions, Symantec strongly encourages testing in isolated environments and submitting feedback to help expedite full support certification.

2. Testing Against Upcoming Operating System Releases

Because ESA Cloud SWG is tightly integrated with low-level operating system APIs, testing against pre-release OS builds is the most effective way to prevent compatibility issues. Symantec continuously tests its software against these betas internally and encourages customers to do the same within their environments.

2.1. Microsoft Windows Pre-release Testing

Microsoft provides early access to upcoming versions and major updates through the Windows Insider Program.

Purpose

Windows Insider Program

https://insider.windows.com/

Varies by Channel (Dev, Beta, Release Preview). New builds can be released weekly.

Provides access to early builds of Windows for testing and feedback.

Recommended Practice:

  1. Enroll a small set of test devices in the Windows Insider Program (Beta Channel is often a good balance of stability and new features).
  2. Install the target pre-release Windows build on these devices.
  3. Install the currently deployed version of the ESA Cloud SWG agent (or a pre-release version, as detailed in Section 3) on the test devices.
  4. Conduct thorough testing of standard user workflows, connectivity, and critical applications to verify the proper functioning of the ESA Cloud SWG agent.
  5. Report any issues encountered to the Symantec support channel.

2.2. Apple macOS Pre-release Testing

Apple typically provides access to upcoming macOS versions during their annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Minor version updates are also provided throughout the year via their beta and developer programs.

Purpose

Apple Developer Program (Requires paid membership)

https://developer.apple.com/programs/

Regular developer betas, typically bi-weekly or weekly during the summer, followed by less frequent minor updates throughout the year (e.g., monthly or less often).

Provides earliest access to macOS, iOS, and other Apple OS betas.

Apple Beta Software Program (Free for consumers)

https://beta.apple.com/

Public betas released shortly after corresponding developer betas.

Provides access to public betas for general user testing.

Recommended Practice:

  1. Enroll a small set of test Mac devices in either the Apple Developer Program or the Apple Beta Software Program.
  2. Install the target pre-release macOS build on these devices.
  3. Install the currently deployed version of the ESA Cloud SWG agent (or a pre-release version, as detailed in Section 3) on the test devices.
  4. Verify core functionality, paying close attention to network filtering, application compatibility, and any new OS security features that might impact the agent.
  5. Report any issues encountered to the Symantec support channel.

3. Installing and Testing Pre-release Versions of ESA Cloud SWG

Pre-release versions of the ESA Cloud SWG agent are available for access and testing via the Enterprise Console. Symantec recommends that customers test these pre-release versions to provide a seamless upgrade experience for their users.

3.1. Prerequisite: Create a Dedicated Test Policy

To prevent a broad deployment of pre-release content, create a separate, dedicated test policy in the Enterprise Console and apply it only to designated test devices. This can be accomplished via the “Device Groups” functionality in Enterprise Console.

3.2. Enabling Pre-release Content

To configure a test policy to receive pre-release agent versions:

  1. Log into the Enterprise Console.
  2. Navigate to Agent Management -> Policies.
  3. Select the dedicated test policy.
  4. Navigate to the Live Update Server section.
  5. Select the option: "Use the Symantec LiveUpdate server for prereleased content".

This setting instructs the agents assigned to the dedicated test policy to download and install the latest available pre-release version of the ESA Cloud SWG software. This allows testing of upcoming agent features and OS compatibility fixes before they are released as GA.

3.3. Testing the Pre-release Agent

Once the pre-release agent is installed on test devices (running either the current GA OS or a pre-release OS build):

  • Verify all security and connectivity features function as expected.
  • Monitor agent performance and resource utilization.
  • Test agent upgrades and uninstalls for stability.
  • Provide immediate feedback to our support team regarding any issues, specifying the agent version and OS version being tested.

Proactive testing and feedback are invaluable in ensuring a robust and stable product upon GA release of both Symantec software and the new operating systems.
