Issue/Introduction

  • Following alarm is triggered on Virtual Distributed Switch:

The vSphere Distributed Switch configuration on some hosts differed from that of the vCenter Server

  • Clicking Actions > Show Details on the warning, lists specific dvPorts and an affected ESXi host.

  • Virtual Machines (VMs) associated with the listed vNetwork Distributed Ports are in an "Inaccessible" state.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

VMware ESXi

Cause

The "Out of Sync" status is caused by a state mismatch between the vCenter Server database and the host proxy switch regarding specific Virtual Distributed Switch (VDS) ports.

The discrepancy arises because the VMs connected to the affected dvPorts are hosted on an inaccessible datastore. Because the VMs are inaccessible, the ESXi host cannot correctly fetch or synchronize the dvPort information for those specific ports, leading to a mismatch between the vCenter Server's central VDS and the ESXi host's local proxy VDS.

Resolution

To resolve the synchronization error and clear the alarm, perform one of the following actions:

Option 1: Resolve Datastore Inaccessibility

  • Identify the datastore hosting the inaccessible Virtual Machines.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve the underlying storage issue to bring the datastore back online.
  • Once the datastore is accessible, the ESXi host will be able to read the VM configuration and synchronize the dvPort status with vCenter automatically.

Option 2: Unregister the Inaccessible Virtual Machines (If the VMs are no longer needed or the datastore cannot be recovered immediately)

  • Right-click the inaccessible Virtual Machines in the vCenter inventory.
  • Select Remove from Inventory.
  • Once the VMs are unregistered, the associated dvPorts will no longer be flagged as conflicting.
  • Warning should clear once the host proxy switch updates its port list.
