Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to migrate a virtual machine using the HCX UI, the operation fails during the network mapping phase.

  • The destination Distributed Port Group may not appear for selection, or the following error is displayed:

    "This is a system Resource"

Environment

VMware HCX

Cause

This issue occurs because the selected destination Distributed Port Group is configured with a VLAN type of VLAN Trunking (a range of VLANs).
VMware HCX does not support mapping a migrated virtual machine's vNIC to a destination port group configured as a trunk port.

Resolution

This is a condition that may occur in a VMware HCX environment.

To resolve this issue and allow the migration to proceed, the destination network must be a port group configured with a single, specific VLAN ID. VMware HCX migration is not supported when the target Distributed Port Group is configured for VLAN Trunking.

If the current port group is configured as a trunk, it must be modified to a single Access VLAN.

If the existing trunk port group must remain in place for other infrastructure requirements, a new dedicated Distributed Port Group must be created and configured with the specific single VLAN ID required for the migrating workloads.
