Issue/Introduction

Clarifying the licensing behavior of an ESXi host when the managing vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) becomes unavailable.

Administrators may want to know if an ESXi host reverts to an evaluation license upon losing connection to the VCSA.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.0

VMware vCenter Server 8.0

VMware ESXi 8.0

Resolution

An ESXi host will not revert to an evaluation license if the vCenter Server (VCSA) goes down. The ESXi host will retain its assigned license and continue to operate normally.

Additional Information

When a license is assigned to an ESXi host through the vCenter Server, the license key is pushed to the ESXi host and stored locally within its configuration. Because the license resides locally on the host, continuous connectivity to the vCenter Server is not required to validate or maintain the host's licensing status.
