Issue/Introduction

When you attempt to configure the IPMI or iLO settings for Power Management DPM in vCenter Server by entering the username, password, MAC address, and IP address, the configuration fails and the following dialog box is displayed:

Operation failed!
A specified parameter was not correct: password

Additionally, the following task record is saved in vCenter Server:

Task Name: Update IPMI or ILO information used by DPM
Status: A specified parameter was not correct: password

Environment

VMware vSphere

Cause

This issue occurs if the password or username configured for IPMI or iLO exceeds 16 characters. There is a length limitation where both the username and password must be 16 characters or less (16 characters is allowed, but 17 characters or more will cause the configuration to fail).

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that both the username and password are 16 characters or less (16 characters is OK, 17 characters is not allowed). Consider creating and registering a dedicated user for vSphere on the IPMI or iLO management interface with credentials that strictly meet these length requirements.
