Issue/Introduction

When attempting to remove an edge from an edge cluster in an NSX Federation environment using RTEP, the deletion fails.

The following error is displayed: [Routing] Entity PolicyEdgeNode//infra/sites/default/enforcement-points/default/edge-cluster/#-#/edge-nodes/# can not be deleted as it is being referenced by entity(s)

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

The Tier-1 (T1) gateway is configured with the High Availability (HA) mode set to Distributed Only. This configuration allows the gateway to use any edge in the cluster, causing the Local Manager (LM) to identify the edge being removed as currently in use.

Resolution

  • Identify the T1 gateway from the error message UUID.

  • Log in to the NSX Global Manager and edit the identified T1 gateway.

  • Change the HA mode to Active Standby from Distributed Only.

  • Select the location and change the Mode to Primary and Secondary depending on the environment architecture.

  • Select the edge cluster, change Auto Allocate Edges to Manual, and manually select the edges that will remain in the cluster (do not select the edge for removal).

  • Log in to the NSX Local Manager and proceed to remove the target edge from the edge cluster.
