Issue/Introduction

  • In NSX UI, the NSX Edge nodes in an NSX Edge cluster are shown as Unknown state.
  • When running NSX upgrade pre-checks, the NSX Edge nodes are listed in Unknown state.
  • The NSX Edge nodes are not currently supporting production traffic.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

Because these NSX Edge nodes are not supporting traffic, no TEP tunnels are established.
Only the status of the multicast tunnels contribute to the overall status of the NSX Edge nodes. As these tunnels are expectedly Unknown, the overall status is incorrectly aggregated and reported as Unknown.

Resolution

This is a known issue impacting VMware NSX.

Workaround:

Because the affected NSX Edge nodes, there is no requirement for multicast traffic in your environment.
To correct the reported status, turn off multicast on the T0 gateway.

  1. Access the NSX Manager UI.

  2. Click on Networking > Tier-0 Gateways >  Click the 3 dots next to the desired T0 and click "Edit".

  3. Locate "MULTICAST" section and toggle the multicast off.

  4. Click Save.
