VMware Cloud Director

Issue/Introduction

  • Attempts to log in to the VAMI UI (https://<Cloud Director Cell FQDN/IP>:5480) as root fail with an authentication error.
  • Logins to the same cell via SSH using the root account and the same password are successful.
  • The issue may be localized to a single cell (e.g., the Primary Cell) while other cells in the server group remain unaffected.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.x

Resolution

To resolve this issue:

  1. Log in to the affected Cloud Director Cell via SSH using the root credentials.
  2. Initiate a reboot of the appliance:
    shutdown -r now
  3. Once the appliance has restarted, wait for the services to initialize and attempt to log in to the VAMI UI (https://<Cloud Director Cell FQDN/IP>:5480) again.

Note. A graceful reboot of the affected appliance is required to re-initialize all management services

  • If you reboot the Primary Cell, the whole VCD instance will go down until it restarts. To stop this from happening, you need to promote a Standby Cell to Primary before you start the reboot.
  • Always keep at least one Standby Cell running. If you don't, the Primary Cell will switch into a "Read Only Primary" mode, and no one will be able to use the VCD UI/API until a Standby Cell is up and running again
