Issue/Introduction

In NSX-T UI, a backup task remains in a "running" state indefinitely without completing or failing.

Symptoms include:

  • The NSX Manager UI displays the message: "Cluster Backup in Progress" under System > Backup & Restore.

  • No backup files are generated on the destination backup server, confirming the task is stalled.

  • You are unable to edit, disable, or reconfigure backup settings because the UI restricts changes while a task is active.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

This issue occurs when the backup process on the NSX Manager nodes becomes unresponsive or stuck at the OS level. Because the management plane tracks the task state, the UI locks the configuration to prevent concurrent backup attempts or configuration conflicts.

Resolution

To release the stuck process and clear the task state, a rolling reboot of the NSX Manager cluster is required.

  1. Reboot the first NSX Manager node.
  2. Wait for the node to return to a "Stable" or "Up" status and ensure the management services are fully started.
  3. Repeat the process for the second and third nodes in the cluster one at a time.
  4. Once the rolling reboot is complete, log back into the NSX Manager UI. The "Cluster Backup in Progress" status should be cleared.
  5. Manually trigger a backup to ensure the service is functioning correctly.
