Issue/Introduction

When performing a pre-check or validation for an update of a Dell VxRail cluster to ESXi 8.0.x, the following warning is reported: rp4vm: RecoverPoint VC Extension is present

Environment

vSphere ESXi 8.x
vCenter Server 8.x

Cause

During a VxRail ESXi host update, the system detects the Dell RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines (RP4VM) extension registered in vCenter.

As a safety precaution, the update pauses because RecoverPoint installs software components directly onto the ESXi hosts. To prevent stability issues, Dell must verify compatibility between the specific RP4VM version and the target ESXi version before proceeding.

Resolution

This warning requires validation and remediation by Dell Support. The following steps must be completed to ensure a successful update:

1. Verify RP4VM Active Status:

  • It must be determined if RecoverPoint for Virtual Machines is actively protecting virtual machines.
    • In Use: The RP4VM must be validated for compatibility with ESXi 8.0.3.

    • Not In Use: The warning may be the result of a "stale" extension remaining from a previous installation.

2. Dell Compatibility Validation:

Note: It is highly recommended to engage Dell Technical Support to verify the minimum RP4VM version required for a successful ESXi 8.x update.
