Issue/Introduction

After upgrading the NetApp Storage Replication Adapter (SRA) / ONTAP Tools for VMware (OTV) to version 10.5 P1, a Site Recovery Manager (SRM) disaster recovery failover succeeds, but the subsequent Reprotect operation fails with the following symptoms:

  • The primary/protected site datastore enters an "inaccessible" state.

  • Virtual machine placeholders are automatically moved to the Site Recovery placeholder datastore.

  • The iGroup on the NetApp LUN disappears at the primary site during the Reprotect workflow.

  • A storage rescan on the ESXi hosts completely removes the affected datastore from the vSphere inventory.

  • At the recovery site, the previously established manual iGroups are replaced by multiple otv-host-<GUID> instances.

  • Attempting to manually fix the SnapMirror resync results in the recovery site datastore also becoming inaccessible, taking the active production workloads offline.

Environment

  • VMware Site Recovery Manager (SRM) 9.0.x

  • VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA) 8.0.3.x

  • NetApp ONTAP Tools for VMware vSphere (SRA plugin) 10.5 P1

Cause

This issue is currently under investigation by NetApp.

The OTV 10.x architecture automates iGroup management (creating the otv-host-<GUID> constructs) and fails to correctly re-map or persist the host-to-storage connectivity during the reversal of the SnapMirror relationships in an SRM Reprotect. This results in the ESXi hosts experiencing an All Paths Down (APD) or Permanent Device Loss (PDL) state for the affected LUNs.

Resolution

The storage mapping and replication reversal logic is entirely controlled by the third-party NetApp Storage Replication Adapter, this issue must be addressed at the storage vendor layer.

Additional Information

If SRM Reprotect functionality is immediately required, revert the ONTAP Tools for VMware appliance to the previously stable 9.x release (e.g., 9.13 SP2) and restore the environment from backups taken prior to the SRA upgrade, pending a patch from NetApp.

For further information on the SRA architecture changes and iGroup management in ONTAP Tools 10.x, consult the official NetApp documentation.
