Issue/Introduction

During the "Select Hosts" step of the Workload Domain or "Add Cluster" wizard in VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x, no hosts appear in the selection list. The UI may display the error: "No suitable hosts available to create a VI workload domain." This occurs even if hosts are correctly commissioned, assigned to a Network Pool, and running a compatible ESXi build.

Environment

* Product: VMware Cloud Foundation 9.x

  • Storage Type: External Fibre Channel (VMFS_FC)

  • Status: Greenfield or Expansion deployments

Cause

The SDDC Manager Host Discovery/Eligibility service performs a validation check for active storage backing. In some VCF 9.x configurations using FC, if a host does not have a pre-existing VMFS-6 volume formatted on the presented LUN, the validation service filters the host out of the UI as "Incompatible" for the VMFS_FC storage type.

Resolution

To resolve this, manually prepare the storage on the ESXi hosts prior to running the wizard:

  1. Log in to the ESXi host(s) directly or via vCenter.

  2. Ensure the FC LUNs are correctly masked/zoned and visible to the host.

  3. Manually create a VMFS-6 datastore on the intended LUN.

  4. Return to the SDDC Manager UI and refresh the wizard; the hosts will now be visible for selection.
