Issue/Introduction

Running cat /proc/cpuinfo on a Linux VM does not come back with AVX being present.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

Per-VM EVC or EVC level on the cluster is set to Westmere or older.

Resolution

Adjust the cluster EVC level (if hardware permits) to a higher version of EVC. AVX was introduced in Sandy Bridge going forward.

  1. Select the cluster from the inventory listing
  2. Configure > VMware EVC > Select Edit
  3. Adjust the level of EVC

Note: All VMs will need to be powered off to allow the EVC levels to be enabled or adjusted.

Adjust the Per-VM EVC level

  1. Select the VM from Inventory
  2. Configure > VMware EVC
  3. Select Edit. If the edit option is grayed out,  ensure the VM is powered off.
  4. Adjust the EVC level to match the underlying physical CPU.
