Issue/Introduction

  • After converting physical RDM to VMDK, the disks appear visible within the Guest OS. However, the SQL cluster service cannot detect the detect the disks.

Environment

VMware vSphere 8.x

Cause

  • The converted VMDKs are on a standard (iSCSI) VMFS datastore, not a clustered VMDK datastore (supported only with FC).

  • With a standard VMFS datastore, only Cluster-in-a-Box (CIB) disk-sharing configuration (with virtual SCSI bus sharing) is supported and only for non-production workloads.

Resolution

Migrate the cluster VMs to a clustered VMDK datastore.

or

Revert to using RDMs for disk sharing.
