VMware HCX

Issue/Introduction

When you connect two Software-Defined Data Centers (SDDCs) using VMware HCX, you are setting up a specialized designed to migrate workloads or extend networks between two cloud-based environments, rather than from a traditional on-premises data center to the cloud.

Environment

VMware HCX

Resolution

To successfully implement an SDDC-to-SDDC topology, you must use the Cloud-to-Cloud deployment model. The HCX Connector appliance is not used in this scenario.

To configure this architecture:

  1. Deploy an HCX Cloud Manager at the source SDDC.

  2. Deploy an HCX Cloud Manager at the destination SDDC.
  3. Establish your Site Pairing based on how you intend to manage operations:
    • For Unidirectional Management: Pair from one side only (e.g., Site A to Site B). Site A becomes the initiator. You must initiate all operations—including Service Mesh creation, Network Extensions, and Migrations (including reverse migrations)—directly from the Site A HCX Cloud Manager UI.

    • For Bidirectional Management: Configure the pairing from both sites. This establishes a bidirectional connection, allowing you to initiate operations from either HCX Manager.
