Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to monitor bandwidth usage for specific physical NICs (for example, vmnic6 or vmnic7) on an ESXi host in VMware Aria Operations, the relevant metrics may not be visible in the user interface.
    • After navigating to Inventory > Datacenter > Select ESXi Host > Metrics, and searching for the required network metrics, the expected physical NIC metrics do not appear in the available metric list.

Environment

VMware Aria Operations 8.18.x

Cause

Some metrics may not be visible because they are disabled by default.

Resolution

To enable the disabled Metrics in the Policy, follow these steps to modify your active policy:

  1. Go to Configure > Policies.

  2. Select the policy target policy  and click Edit Policy.

  3. In the policy workspace, navigate to the Metrics and Properties tile.

  4. Under the Object Type drop-down menu, search for and select Host System.

  5. Use the Metric Name search bar to find the metrices :

    • Network I/O | bytesRx (kbps) – net|bytesRx_average

    • Network I/O | bytesTx (kbps) – net|bytesTx_average

  6. Locate the specific metrics . You will notice their State is set to Deactivated.

  7. Change the state for these metrics to Activated.

  8. Click Save to apply the policy changes.

Note: After enabling the metrics, it generally takes 1–2 collection cycles (approximately 5–10 minutes) for the data to populate under the host’s Metrics tab .
