Issue/Introduction

3rd party Backup Solution configured in vCenter environment such as networker fails and we can see the below error from backup jobs.

HTTP Get request failed to download config file '[DSNAME] VMname/VMname.vmx' using URL 'https://vCenterservername/folder/VMname HTTP Status code: 500

nslookup <Backup_Proxy_FQDN> fails with a connection timeout error on the vCenter Server because it cannot resolve the backup proxy's FQDN

Environment

vCenter Server 8.0

Cause

vCenter Server was configured with a wrong DNS server.

Resolution

Update the DNS Server IP address for vCenter Server using the below KB article:

Additional Information

To isolate issues specific to the vCenter or ESXi host, following tests can be performed:

Test Datastore Access (Host UI): Log in to the host's web UI (https://hostFQDN/ui), browse the datastore where the VM resides, and attempt to download the VM's .vmx file.

Test Datastore Access (vSphere Client): Using the vSphere Client, attempt to download the .vmx file of any powered-off VM experiencing backup failures.

Test Snapshot Functionality: Manually take and consolidate a snapshot for the affected VM.

Isolate VM-Specific Issues: If the issue is limited to only a few VMs, perform a storage migration of an affected VM to a different datastore, and then re-initiate the backup process.
