Issue/Introduction

When you attempt to upgrade a VMware NSX environment currently running a Limited Export (LE) build, the upgrade pre-check fails. The system displays the following error message:

NSX installation is a Limited Export build and cannot be upgraded using the standard MUB file

Additionally, you cannot locate the required LE MUB file in the Broadcom Support Portal because your current license entitles you only to the Standard version of the product.

Environment

  • VMware NSX 4.x

Cause

The environment was originally installed using a Limited Export (LE) version of VMware NSX. Limited Export versions strictly require an LE-specific Management Upgrade Bundle (MUB) file for upgrades. Standard MUB files are incompatible with LE installations. If your current account license is not entitled for Limited Export versions, the portal restricts access to the LE MUB files.

Resolution

Option 1: Obtain a Limited Export (LE) License

  • Contact your Broadcom Account Representative to discuss obtaining an LE entitled license.

  • Once the LE license is applied to your account, you can download the correct LE MUB and PUB files from the portal and complete the upgrade.

Option 2: Uninstall and Reinstall VMware NSX (Standard Version)

  • If you cannot obtain an LE license, you must completely uninstall the current NSX LE stack and perform a fresh installation using the Standard version that matches your current license entitlement.

  • To remove NSX from your clusters, follow the steps in Remove NSX from a Cluster.

  • For comprehensive removal guidance, review Troubleshooting NSX uninstall process.

Additional Information

This is expected behavior. The MUB/PUB files available in the portal are directly tied to your active license entitlement. Previously this limitation may not have been enforced.
