Issue/Introduction

When attempting to move a Virtual Machine between vApps in VMware Cloud Director, the task fails and performs a rollback (e.g., due to memory reservation mismatches between the source and destination Provider VDCs).

Following the failure, you may observe the following behavior:

  • When retrying the "Move Virtual Machine" task, the destination vApp status in the "Select Target vApp" window appears as "Powered On" with a warning icon (!).
  • Prior to the initial migration attempt, the destination vApp status was "Resolved".
  • In the general vApp list or the "General" tab of the specific vApp, the status shows as "Powered On", but the warning icon (!) is not present.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.x

Cause

This behavior occurs due to the following reasons:

  1. Status Change to "Powered On":
During a Live Migration (Hot Migration) attempt, the vApp and its environment are initialized.
If the migration fails and rolls back, the vApp may remain in a "Powered On" state as a result of the task execution process.

  2. Warning Icon (!):
The "!" icon displayed in the "Select Target vApp" wizard reflects the status of the most recent job associated with that object.
It indicates that the previous migration task failed, rather than indicating a current functional error or corruption within the vApp itself.

Resolution

The warning icon and the "Powered On" status do not necessarily indicate a permanent issue with the destination vApp.

To resolve this and complete the migration:

  1. Identify the root cause of the migration failure (e.g., adjust memory reservation values to ensure compatibility).
  2. Verify that the destination environment has sufficient resources.
  3. Proceed with the "Move Virtual Machine" task again. Once a new task completes successfully, the status information will be updated.
