Issue/Introduction

When attempting to boot using iPXE, you receive an error stating Failed to start the image file.  Failed to read/process proxy response.  Failed to PXE boot.  Failed to start the application.   PXE-E21 PXE boot cancelled.

Environment

Ghost Solution Suite / Deployment Solution

Cause

iPXE is not completely installed

Resolution

The first step is to open a web browser and go to the following URL http://localhost:4433/Altiris/iPXE/GetPxeScript.aspx It should look similar to the following screenshot.  If you get an error saying the page cannot be displayed, that is a problem.

Open IIS Manager and review the iPXE website.  It should look like it does in the following screenshot:

If instead it looks like it does in the following screenshot, there is a problem:

To correct the iPXE installation, follow these steps:

From the DSSetup folder, run Setup.exe by right-clicking on Setup.exe and choosing to run as administrator.

First, run the pre-requisite check by clicking on the button.  Everything under the GSS Web Console and iPXE Check Summary should show passed. If they don't pass, stop and troubleshoot that.  If they do pass, continue.

Choose Component Install and continue until you get to Installing Components:

Choose Configure GSS Server and PXE Server(s) for iPXE

On the next screen, it should look like the following screenshot.  Notice the top portion is greyed out?  In the bottom portion, select the PXE server, which will be the GSS server or your remote server.

Use an administrator account.  Usually in the format domain\username.  Click Next and then click on Install.  Wait for the process to complete.  When done, either restart the server or wait a couple of minutes. Exit out of IIS Manager if in there and then go back in.  Check if it looks like it should look.  If so, can you now get to http://localhost:4433/Altiris/iPXE/GetPxeScript.aspx If so, text iPXE boot again.  Keep in mind you may have to rebuild your iPXE preboots.
