Issue/Introduction

  • vSAN cluster start task may fail with "The restart is paused due to a failure".

  • vSAN cluster restart task may fail with error "Wait for HA enable failed" during 'Re-enable HA on this cluster'.

  • The vSAN cluster restart task failure should show on vCenter UI as below.

Environment

  • VMware vSAN 8.x
  • VMware vSAN 9.x
  • vSAN cluster Shutdown was executed using vCenter UI.

Cause

  • This issue would occur if one or more hosts are still in maintenance mode (vSAN DECOM state) while running Cluster Restart task.

  • Upon running cluster RESTART task, the validation may complete for vSAN hosts maintenance mode. However, one of more hosts may still be in maintenance mode.

  • The screenshot below show the hosts are in maintenance mode. However, the validated status show Green for "Take all hosts out of maintenance mode".

Resolution

  1. In order to resolve the issue, please take all the hosts out of maintenance mode and RESUME RESTART on vSAN cluster.

  2. The KB vSAN and vSphere maintenance modes may diverge can be used to validate if the maintenance mode status does not show up on UI for hosts.

  3. Post fixing the Cluster Restart if cluster reports any health warnings for data health and configuration inconsistency issues, please refer vSAN cluster unable to restart after a planned cluster shutdown to validate the settings modified during the shutdown.
