Issue/Introduction

  • In the event of a temporary network disconnection, a failover occurred for Fault Tolerance (FT) enabled virtual machine.
  • The following log is recorded in the vmkernel.log.
Error waiting on socket read (8000/8000 ms elapsed/timeout): Timeout

Cause

Due to the loss of communication between the ESXi hosts where the virtual machines are running, the conditions for a Fault Tolerance failover were met.

Resolution

Check if there were any problem in the ESXi network, such as with the vmnic, or in the underlay physical network equipments.
If it is a temporary disconnection such as network congestion, consider extending the time until the timeout by increase FT.FTCptLogTimeout in the ESXi advanced settings from the default of 8000 (ms) up to a maximum of 30000.
