Issue/Introduction

  • In vSphere, the Distributed Switch has an alarm stating "The vSphere Distributed Switch configuration on some hosts differed from that of the vCenter Server"
  • Under "Show Details" on the alarm, a single ESXi host and many ports are listed.
  • Looking at the ports listed on the alarm under the "Ports" tab on the Distributed Switch, all of the mentioned ports have something listed in the "Connectee" column.

Environment

  • VMware vCenter Server
  • VMware vSphere ESXi

Cause

The vCenter Server and each individual ESXi host maintain independent copies of the vSphere Distributed Switch configuration state. Any temporary network disconnect, latency, or communication disruption between an ESXi host and the vCenter Server can cause these separate databases to lose synchronization.

Resolution

Please follow the steps in the following KB Article to resolve this alarm - "The vSphere Distributed Switch configuration on some hosts differed from that of the vCenter Server" seen in the vCenter Networking icon view, Summary tab of a vDS
