To change the default storage policy for a vSAN datastore.

Environment

VMware vSAN 8.X

Cause

Updating policy on a datastore.

Resolution

Procedure for Updating vSAN Default Storage Policy

  1. Validation: Before applying a new policy, verify that the target VM storage policy (e.g., RAID-1, RAID-5, or RAID-6 configurations) is compatible with the underlying vSAN cluster resources, such as the number of available hosts and fault domains.

  2. Navigation: In the vSphere Client, navigate to Storage and select the specific vSAN datastore.

  3. Configuration Access: * Click the Configure tab.

    • Under the General section, locate the Default Storage Policy.

  4. Policy Selection:

    • Click the Edit button.

    • Select the desired storage policy from the list of compatible policies (those with vSAN-specific rule sets).

    • (Optional): You may also modify the Improved Virtual Disk Home Storage Policy by clicking Edit to assign a specific policy for VM home objects.

  5. Application: Click OK.
