How to configure nested fault domains on a 2-Node vSAN Stretched Cluster with 3 disk groups?

Issue/Introduction

  • A hybrid disk configuration with 3x disk groups per host.
  • vSAN stretched cluster is configured with the default vSAN storage policy (RAID-1).

Requirement to Achieve,

  1. Failures to tolerate (Primary): 1 failure - RAID-1 (PFTT=1).

  2. Secondary failure to tolerate =1 failure - SFFT=1

How can I define the secondary failure?

Environment

VMware vSAN 9.x
VMware vSAN 8.x

Resolution

Please perform the following check to confirm if the options are present in environment:

  1. Select the option, Storage Policy -> Edit -> Name and Description -> vSAN
  2. Under vSAN select the below option,
  3. Select next and check if datastore appears compatible,

    if yes then move to next page.
  4. Click on finish for the changes to apply. 

This configuration satisfies the requirement for a hybrid vSAN architecture utilizing three disk groups per host.
