SDDC Manager Restore Fails with EXTRACT_SDDC_MGR_BACKUP_FAILED Due to Version Mismatch in VMware Cloud Foundation

Issue/Introduction

• Restoring the SDDC Manager from a file-based backup fails during the ExtractSDDCManagerBackup task.
• When this occurs, the user interface or the sddc-manager-restore.log displays the following version verification error:

SDDC Manager lcm version verification failed, Actual:<Build_A> - Expected:<Build_B>.

• In log file:  /var/log/vmware/vcf/sddc-manager-migration-app/sddc-manager-migration-app.log

Environment

• VMware Cloud Foundation 5.x

Cause

The restore process requires the target SDDC Manager appliance to be at a build version equal to or higher than the version that generated the backup.

Resolution

 

• Identify the Required Build: Note the "Expected" build number from the error message, or How to determine SDDC-Manager-Appliance ova to Restore from Backup

• Download the SDDC Manager OVA that matches the "Expected" build number identified in the error log, or download the latest OVA available for that specific release.

• Follow the steps in the VMware Docs to restore the SDDC manager. Prepare for Restoring SDDC Manager
