This article provides guidance on how to control or limit bandwidth utilization for replication traffic in vSphere Replication.
Bandwidth limitation cannot be configured directly from the vSphere Replication appliance.
Instead, bandwidth control must be implemented at the network layer using Traffic Shaping policies.
Bandwidth can be controlled by enabling Traffic Shaping on the replication port group configured on:
vSphere Standard Switch (vSS)
vSphere Distributed Switch (vDS)
What is Traffic Shaping?
Traffic Shaping is a feature in VMware vSphere that allows administrators to regulate the amount of bandwidth consumed by virtual network traffic.
Traffic shaping policies allow configuration of:
Average Bandwidth (Kb/s) – Average allowed throughput
Peak Bandwidth (Kb/s) – Maximum burst throughput
Burst Size (KB) – Amount of traffic allowed to burst before throttling
By applying traffic shaping to the replication port group, replication bandwidth can be throttled according to organizational requirements.
