Issue/Introduction

  • When attempting to configure License Groups in VMware Aria Operations, the selection list displays multiple entries for the same ESXi host (e.g., duplicate Hostnames or FQDNs).

  • The License Usage view incorrectly reports the license capacity as "License is over used since it has xxx members which exceeds capacity" even when the actual number of active hosts is within the license limit.

  • Refreshing the license count or the user interface may temporarily clear the error, but the incorrect "Over Used" status returns shortly after.

  • The issue persists even after validating that the vCenter Server inventory is clean and contains no duplicate hosts.

Environment

  • VMware Aria Operations 8.18.x (Specifically observed in version 8.18.0).

  • vCenter Server 7.x / 8.x.

Resolution

In this specific case, the issue was observed to be resolved after the customer updated the environment to VMware Aria Operations 8.18.5.

Following the update, the inventory collection process successfully reconciled the object identifiers, removing the duplicate host entries and restoring the correct license usage count.

Post-Upgrade Validation:

  1. Log in to the Aria Operations UI.

  2. Navigate to Administration > Management > Licensing.

  3. Click Refresh on the License Keys tab.

  4. Verify that the usage count now matches the actual number of active hosts and that duplicate entries no longer appear in the License Group configuration wizard.
