Issue/Introduction

  • Unable to delete old vCenter in VMware NSX, UI is throwing error:
Compute Manager delete failed: Compute manager <UUID-xxx-xxx-xxx> is in use. Please delete NSX managed VM(s) and then retry deleting compute manager.
  • The detected NSX managed VM is one of the NSX manager itself.
  • The old vCenter is no longer available as it is decommissioned.

Environment

VMware NSX

Cause

This is expected behavior as appliances deployed through the compute manager must be removed before the compute manager is decommissioned.

Resolution

Before decommissioning of the vCenter, remove any NSX Managers deployed on this vCenter:

  1. Power off the NSX manager using the vCenter User Interface.
  2. In the NSX interface, navigate to Appliances.
  3. Select the NSX manager you wish to remove.
  4. Go to Actions and select Delete.
  5. Redeploy the node on another vCenter (and add if to the cluster, if required).

Following this, the compute manager can be successfully deleted from NSX.
