Issue/Introduction

The following message is sometimes logged in vmkernel.log.

HPP: HppScsiAADetermineStatus:95: Unknown Check condition 0/2 0x2 0x3a 0x1.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESX 8.x

Cause

The log message indicates that the device reported a NOT_READY MEDIUM_NOT_PRESENT TRAY CLOSED status. This response was received when the ESXi host executed a 'Test Unit Ready' command, which is a routine action to verify the status of the storage path. The device generating this entry is presumed to be a CD/DVD drive with no media currently inserted.

The path status check currently occurs at a minimum interval of five minutes, typically generating only a single line of output per execution. It should be noted that the logging frequency may increase in certain scenarios, particularly if the path status changes are detected.

Resolution

This message is harmless. It can be ignored.
