Issue/Introduction

When attempting to initiate a vMotion task, one of the following precheck errors is observed:

  • vMotion is not licensed for the Source host '######'

  • vMotion is not licensed for the Destination host '######'

Cause

An incorrect license type is assigned to the host as observed when logged into vCenter and selecting Licensing --> Licenses --> Assets -->Hosts

Resolution

Add the correct licensing and assign to hosts under Licensing>Licenses>Assets>Hosts and then disconnect and reconnect the hosts

  1. In the vSphere Client, navigate to Administration > Licensing > Licenses > Assets > Hosts.

  2. Select the target host experiencing the validation failure.

  3. Assign a valid, non-evaluation vSphere compute license (Standard, Enterprise Plus, or Foundation) to the asset.

  4. Retry the vMotion operation to confirm the licensing precheck now succeeds.
