Issue/Introduction

  • The management domain, without VMware vSphere Supervisor has been upgraded successfully from VCF 5.2.2 to 9.0.2
  • The issue is being encountered when upgrading a workload domain, with VMware vSphere Supervisor, from VCF 5.2.2 to 9.0.2 - after NSX has been upgraded to 9.0.2, while attempting to upgrade vCenter to 9.0.2
  • The current vCenter version is 8.0 Update 3c 8.0.3.00300, the target vCenter version is 9.0.2
  • The upgrade is failing with an error -

Description:

Upgrade - VCENTER vcenter_fqdn

Progress Messages:

vCenter upgrade failed at the VCENTER_UPGRADE_PRECHECK stage.
Upgrade validation has failed.
The vCenter Server upgrade is blocked because this Supervisor is incompatible: { xxxxxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx:v1.29.7+vmware.1-fips-vscO.1.10-24224934 }
Failed to run additional verification for the vCenter services, vCenter upgrade is rolled back.

Remediation Message:

Before you upgrade the vCenter Server, upgrade the Supervisor to a supported version. The supported Supervisor versions are: [1.30, 1.31, 1.32]

Environment

VCF 9.0.2

Cause

  • The vCenter version currently is 8.0 Update 3c 8.0.3.00300, in this version of vCenter the latest supported Supervisor version is 1.29.7
  • The interoperability matrix link below confirms that for vCenter version  8.0 Update 3c 8.0.3.00300, the latest supported Supervisor version is 1.29.7

Resolution

In the order outlined below -

  1. Upgrade from vCenter 8.0 Update 3c 8.0.3.00300 to vCenter 8.0 Update 3g 8.0.3.00600
  2. Upgrade the Supervisor from version 1.29.7 to 1.30 minimum
  3. Upgrade the vCenter 8.0 Update 3g 8.0.3.00600 to 9.0.2

This resolution resolves the dependency issues allowing the objective of upgrading vCenter to 9.0.2 to be realised.

Additional Information

Attempting to upgrade to vCenter 8.0 Update 3h 8.0.3.00700 instead of vCenter 8.0 Update 3g 8.0.3.00600 will not work.

The interoperability matrix link below confirms that vCenter 8.0 Update 3h 8.0.3.00700 is not compatible with the NSX 9.0.2 version
