VCF Operations

Issue/Introduction

You are unable to see custom attributes for Host Systems in VCF Operations, even though they are configured in the vCenter Server inventory.

Important: In VCF Operations, vCenter Custom Attributes are mapped to the Custom Tag property. If you search for a property or metric specifically named "Custom Attribute," it will not appear. Instead, these values are collected under: Metrics > Properties > Summary > Custom Tag

If you experience synchronization delays, you can apply a manual refresh workaround—similar to the object rediscovery methods used in related scenarios—to force the collection of these attributes for Host Systems.

Environment

  • VCF Operations 9.0.x

  • vCenter Server 7.x / 8.x / 9.x

Cause

Some property metrics in VCF Operations are initially collected every 24 hours. If Host custom attributes were recently added or modified in vCenter, the background collection process has not yet executed to synchronize the data to detect the property change.

Resolution

Manually trigger a rediscovery by toggling Maintenance Mode for the specific host to force an immediate collection of properties.

  1. Log in to the VCF Operations UI.

  2. Navigate to Infrastructure Operations > Configurations > Inventory Management > Host System.

  3. Select the specific host from the Objects list.

  4. Click Start Maintenance in the tool bar menu.

  5. Wait 1–2 minutes, then click End Maintenance.

  6. Navigate to the host object and check the Metrics tab under Properties > Summary > Custom Tag to verify the attribute is now present.

Note: This process results in a brief (approximately 5-minute) gap in metric collection for the specific host while it is in maintenance mode.
