"Install IO Filter" task fails with "Cannot complete the operation. See the event log for details. Failed to modify installation status of I/O filter"

Issue/Introduction

• Installation of the third-party I/O filter "Install IO Filter" task fails in vCenter with the error below:
  
  • "Cannot complete the operation. See the event log for details. Failed to modify installation status of I/O filter"
    
    
    
• The following messages are displayed for the vSphere Lifecycle Manager (vLCM) cluster image:
  
  • Host is not compatible with the image.
  • Remediating this host will enable these Solutions: Rubrik IO Filter for Continuous Data Protection #.#.
    

Environment

• vCenter Server 8.0 Update 3 and later

Cause

• The error occurs because the IO Filter components are defined in the vLCM Cluster Image but have not yet been installed on the ESXi hosts. The operation fails because the host must be remediated to install the required VIBs and align with the cluster's desired state.

Resolution

• 1. Navigate to the target Cluster in the vCenter UI.

  2. Go to the Updates tab.

  3. Initiate Remediation:

     • For the whole cluster: Click the Remediate All button.

     • For individual hosts: Select the specific host(s) and click Actions > Remediate.

  4. Review the remediation wizard prompts and click Remediate to enable Rubrik IO filter solution on the ESXi hosts.
