Issue/Introduction

Symptoms:

  • vSAN host reports "0" drives under "vCenter UI > vSAN cluster > Configure > Disk Management".

  • On host cli, "vdq -iH" may not return with any drive info.
  • Host may have undergone an unexpected power outage.

Environment

VMware vSAN (All Versions)

Cause

Drives on ESXi host goes missing or reporting 0 when the vmhba adapter (Dell HBA###) is not being detected on ESXi .

Host's hardware console (e.g., iDRAC for Dell) may also not list the adapter. This indicates a hardware-level initialization failure, as the adapter is also missing from the iDRAC hardware inventory.

Resolution

Cold boot from iDRAC or the host management console is required to refresh the hardware console.

Engage the hardware vendor to further investigate the issue.
