Issue/Introduction

  • When a new Virtual Machine(VM) is being deployed or created inside VMware Cloud Director(VCD) by a tenant user it cannot be viewed across all the users in the OrgVDC or tenant level.
  • The VM can only be viewed by the Organization Administrator or the user that created the VM inside the OrgVDC.
  • You want to share VMs with everyone in the tenant.

Environment

VMware Cloud Director 10.6.1

Cause

This is as per design from VCD. Only the Organization Administrator has a right called Administrator View that allows it to see all VMs at the OrgVDC level.

Resolution

To grant tenant users access to all VMs you have two options as mentioned below:

Option 1:

You can use the share option for each VM that you wish to share across all the users in the OrgVDC. To share a VM please follow the below steps:

  1. Click on the VM and go into the VM from VCD UI.
  2. Click on Sharing on the Left Panel of VM view.
  3. Click on Edit and check the Users you want to share with.
  4. Choose from the 3 options of Read Only, Read/Write or Full Control

Option 2:

You can create a new Role or update the existing Role with enabling the Administrator View and grant the same role to all the users to view all the entities across the OrgVDC level.

  1. Go to Administration from the Organization view.
  2. Click on Roles.
  3. Go to the existing Role that needs to be edited or create a new Role(as per requirement).
  4. Go to ADMINISTRATION inside the Roles.
  5. Check or tick on Administrator View from the General Section.

NOTE: Granting the above right will make the user view all the entities across the Datacenter or OrgVDC level.
