Issue/Introduction

When using VMware converter to convert a powered off Linux VM, the destination machine wizard fails to provide the Select volumes to copy option under Data copy type and editing the disk size for the destination VM is not possible.

Environment

VMware Converter 6.6

VMware vCenter 7.x

VMware vCenter 8.x

Cause

Volume-based cloning is performed at file or block level and this option is available only for powered on source machines that run Windows and Linux, and for all other supported sources that run Windows.

If you initiate a conversion for a Linux VM is powered off state it is expected to not let us resize the disk.

Resolution

Power on the Linux server and then attempt the conversion on the Linux machine as a P2V.
