vSAN skyline health show Critical warnings for the physical disk health.

Issue/Introduction

• vSAN diskgroup show failed on a host with multiple vSAN disks showing ABSENT.

• vSAN skyline health may show the disks health as failed and would report as below.

• One of the controller may not show up on ESXi under storage controllers. When you compare working hosts and affected host, you may see the affected host missing a storage controller.

Environment

• VMware vSAN 8.x

• VMware vSAN 9.x

Cause

• The issue is seen when the Storage controller (HBA) failed or removed form the hardware/server.

• You may see similar event on Lenovo hardware manager (xclarity) as below which indicate the hardware failure or removal.

Hardware: ThinkSystem 430-8i SAS/SATA 12Gb HBA(SN: L4S######86) in slot 7 is removed.

Resolution

Please reach out to hardware vendor to assist with the hardware issue.

Once the hardware issue is addressed and the drives are attached to the new controller, the vSAN disk groups would show healthy.
