Snapshot consolidation failed with the error message: "One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot."

Issue/Introduction

The following error occurs during snapshot consolidation:

"One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or by a snapshot."

This environment uses VDI and snapshots of the VDI virtual machines are being taken.

Environment

VMware vSphere ESXi 8.x
VMware vCenter Server 8.x
Omnissa Horizon

Cause

This issue occurs when a snapshot is taken while the "Recompute virtual disk digest" task is in progress.
Taking a snapshot of the target virtual machine while this task is running is not supported.

Resolution

You can avoid this issue by using one of the following two methods:

• Take the snapshot after the "Recompute virtual disk digest" task has completed.
• Disable View Storage Accelerator.
