Issue/Introduction

  • The following message appears on the guest OS customization screen, preventing you from proceeding with the virtual machine creation.
    The public key in the specification does not match the vCenter public key. You have to reenter the password in order to proceed.
  • This issues have been observed since the data-encipherment certificate update.

Environment

VMware vCenter Server

Cause

Custom specifications created before the renewal of the data-encipherment certificate will fail to decrypt passwords due to the encryption key update.

Resolution

Edit the customization specification and re-enter the password. This operation allows you to re-encrypt the password.

  1. Log in to vSphere Client.
  2. Open [Policies and Profiles] > [VM Customization Specifications].
  3. Select the specification you intend to use for deployment and click [Edit].
  4. Proceed through the wizard and verify the password input fields for “Administrator Password” and “Domain Password” (if applicable).
  5. Re-enter the password and complete (OK) the wizard.
