Issue/Introduction

The cluster displays a warning state with the following message:
vSphere HA detected an HA cluster state version inconsistency in cluster <Cluster-name>

  • Yellow warning icon on the Cluster object.
  • "Summary" tab reflects a "Configuration Error" for vSphere HA.
  • FDM agents on individual hosts may report being in a "Connecting" or "Initialization" state indefinitely.

Environment

  • vCenter server Appliance 8.x
  • vCenter server Appliance 7.x

Resolution

To synchronize the cluster state, a re-initialization of the Fault Domain Manager (FDM) agents is required. This is most effectively achieved by performing a "Disable/Enable" cycle of the HA feature, which pushes a fresh configuration state to all participating hosts in the cluster.

Step 1: Turn it Off

Select your Cluster:

  1. Log in to vSphere and select cluster name in the left menu.
  2. Go to ConfigurevSphere Availability.
  3. Click Edit, toggle the vSphere HA switch to Off, and hit OK.
  4. Watch the Recent Tasks at the bottom. Wait until every host shows it has successfully "Unconfigured vSphere HA."

Step 2: Turn it Back On

  1. Click Edit again in the same menu.
  2. Switch vSphere HA back to On.
  3. Double-check your specific rules (like Admission Control) before clicking OK.
  4. vCenter will now reinstall the agents. This triggers an "Election" to decide which host is the Master.

Step: 3: Verify

  1. Look for "Reconfigure vSphere HA" to finish for all hosts.
  2. Ensure the "HA State" warning has disappeared and now says Protected or Running.
