Issue/Introduction

The following article describes the method to determine the patch level of a given instance of Service Management, examining the contents of the HIS files that exist across Service Desk, xFlow, Service Catalog, and IT Asset Manager installations.

Other methods may also be explored to validate patch levels for each product.

Environment

All releases of Service Management across all components

Resolution

The HIS file, whose file name is derived from the name of the server where the software is installed, is located in the following places in the given install locations.  Default locations depicted.

There may be several instances of the same HIS file name, one for each installed Service Management component on the same server, depending on naming nomenclature.

Search Server (Elasticsearch):
Location:  C:\Program Files\CA\SC\CASearchServer
File name:  [SERVERNAME].his

Service Catalog:
Location:  C:\Program Files\CA\Service Catalog
File name:  CA_SLCM_[SERVERNAME].HIS

Service Management Administration
Location:  C:\Program Files\CA\Service Management Administration
File name:  CA_CASMAdmin_[SERVERNAME].HIS

xFlow:
Location (Windows):  C:\Program Files\CA\xFlow
Location (Linux):  /opt/CA/xFlow
File name:  [SERVERNAME].his

Service Desk Manager:
Location (Windows):  C:\Program Files (x86)\CA\Service Desk Manager
Location (Linux):  Environment variable $NX_ROOT or /opt/CA/ServiceDeskManager
File name:  [SERVERNAME].HIS

IT Asset Manager Common Admin Framework (CAF) Component:
Location:  C:\Program Files (x86)\CA\SharedComponents\CASM
File name:  CAF_CASM_[SERVERNAME].HIS

Additional Information

All HIS files can be read via a text editor, indicating the date, time, and the activity performed for the patch install.  For example, the xFlow HIS file may contain an entry similar to this:

[Tue 10/08/2024 18:58:39.94] Installed xFlow Analyst Interface Patch xFlow-CUM4-17.4.0.0
RELEASE=17.0
[Thu 01/09/2025 19:22:30.34] Installed xFlow Analyst Interface Patch xFlowRU3-CUM4-17.4.3.0
RELEASE=17.0

The above indicates that xFlow was installed on Oct, 2024 and was updated to 17.4 RU3 on Jan, 2025.

The other HIS files, apart from the Service Desk Manager HIS file, follow a similar format.
